A Practical Luxury Vinyl Cleaning Routine
For most luxury vinyl floors, a sensible cleaning routine starts with removing loose grit, wiping spills promptly and using a lightly damp mop with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. The exact instructions for your brand and collection take priority over a homemade recipe or a general-purpose floor-care label.
Identify the floor before choosing a cleaner
Look for the brand and collection on your invoice, carton or warranty documents. Luxury vinyl plank (LVP), luxury vinyl tile (LVT) and different rigid-core constructions can have different surface treatments and care requirements.

A dependable everyday routine
- Remove dry debris first. Use a soft broom, microfiber dust mop or vacuum attachment suitable for hard floors. Avoid a rotating beater bar unless the flooring instructions explicitly allow it.
- Blot spills promptly. Remove liquid and food residue with a soft cloth using the approved method, then dry the area. Do not leave standing water at joints or around the perimeter.
- Damp-mop when needed. Use the specified cleaner and dilution. Keep the pad clean and avoid soaking the floor. Follow any rinse instructions for the approved product.
- Check for residue. If a film appears, review the amount of cleaner used and whether the mop pad is dirty. More detergent is not necessarily the answer.
Why we do not recommend one cleaning recipe for every vinyl floor
Vinegar, dish soap, essential oils and abrasive baking-soda pastes are not universally approved for luxury vinyl. Some can leave residue or conflict with the surface-care instructions. A product being homemade or described as natural does not establish compatibility.
For example, COREtec’s official LVP cleaning guide recommends its approved pH-neutral cleaning approach and advises against vinegar, detergent, wax, citrus-based cleaners and polish for its floors. Use that guidance for the relevant COREtec product; do not assume every other manufacturer specifies the same cleaner.
Can you use a steam mop?
Do not use steam unless the manufacturer expressly permits it for your exact collection and explains how. Waterproof construction does not automatically make a flooring product steam-safe. Heat and moisture exposure must be considered together.
Scuffs and stubborn spots
Start with the approved cleaner and a soft cloth. Do not immediately use a solvent, harsh brush or abrasive pad. Stain-specific instructions may differ from routine cleaning instructions, so check the care guide or contact the supplier before treating paint, adhesive, ink or other difficult marks.
Test an approved treatment in an inconspicuous area and follow the directions. A deep scratch or dent is physical damage, not dirt; scrubbing harder will not repair it.
Prevent avoidable wear
- Use suitable furniture protectors and keep grit from collecting beneath them.
- Lift furniture rather than dragging it; plan a safe, floor-compatible method for moving appliances.
- Use entrance mats with backing approved for the flooring. Some backing materials can discolor certain vinyl products.
- Clean and dry the areas beneath pet bowls and plant containers.
- Follow the product’s guidance for direct sunlight, indoor temperature and rolling chairs.
When to ask for help
If you notice lifting edges, gaps, soft spots, discoloration after a leak or recurring moisture, photograph the area and investigate the source. A water-tolerant plank does not protect the subfloor or surrounding materials from every leak. Do not cover a recurring problem with a rug or apply a coating to hide it.
