A kitchen and living room renovation works best when the major decisions are made together. Flooring, cabinets, countertops, appliances and furniture affect one another. Coordinating them early helps create a cohesive space and reduces avoidable changes after materials have been ordered.

Start with the problems you want to solve

List what does not work in the existing rooms: limited cabinet storage, worn flooring, awkward appliance access, too little preparation space or a layout that interrupts conversation. Separate those practical needs from finishes you simply want to refresh.

Set an approximate budget and identify what must stay. Keeping the existing appliance and plumbing locations may lead to a different scope from moving an island or removing a wall. Structural changes and major electrical or plumbing relocation need separate planning and are not automatically part of a cabinet installation.

Choose the main finishes as a group

Cabinets

Begin with a cabinet style and storage plan suited to how you use the kitchen. Shaker, traditional and frameless styles can create different visual effects, but construction and features vary by line. Confirm drawer layouts, finished panels, fillers, hardware and appliance clearances as well as door color.

Countertops and surfaces

View the countertop sample beside the cabinet door and flooring. Decide whether the counter should be a quiet background or the main pattern in the room. Strong veining may need more deliberate coordination with a highly varied floor.

JV offers quartz and other countertop surfaces, including quartzite, granite and marble options. Material characteristics and care requirements differ. Full slabs can be viewed through JV’s partner showroom network; a small sample may not represent the entire slab’s movement.

Flooring

A consistent flooring direction can visually connect the rooms, but a continuous appearance does not remove a product’s required transitions or expansion details. Consider kitchen moisture exposure, living-room furniture, pet activity and the condition of the existing subfloor.

Check the colors in the actual rooms

Place samples together in daylight and under the lighting you use at night. Compare undertones: a warm ivory counter, cool gray cabinet and orange-toned floor may feel different together than each looked separately.

Include items that are staying, such as a sofa, dining table or nearby tile. You do not need every surface to match. A limited palette with deliberate contrast often makes selection easier.

Plan the sequence before demolition

1. Confirm the scope and measurements. Review cabinet layout, appliance specifications, flooring boundaries and work that needs a separate contractor or approval.
2. Finalize selections and availability. Confirm the cabinet line, finish, hardware, flooring and countertop direction. Understand lead times before planning around an assumed completion date.
3. Agree on removal and preparation. Identify demolition, disposal, subfloor assessment and any work revealed after removal.
4. Coordinate cabinets and flooring. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s rules for fixed cabinets and islands, particularly with floating floors. Establish the sequence with the installer.
5. Template the countertops at the right stage. On applicable JV projects, cabinets are installed before the stone professional templates the completed layout for fabrication.
6. Complete installation and finishing details. Confirm who handles reconnections, hardware, trim, touch-ups and the final walkthrough.

Make the written estimate specific

JV can coordinate cabinets, flooring and countertop work according to the agreed project scope. Cabinet demolition and disposal, assembly, panels, fillers, hardware and basic reconnections may be included when specified. Major plumbing or electrical relocation and structural work are not automatically included.

Ask how unexpected conditions will be documented and priced before extra work proceeds. Clarify furniture and belongings, access, delivery, protection of adjacent rooms and the period when the kitchen may be unavailable.

Bring useful information to the first conversation
